    We report here a two-in-one strategy for the Pd(II)-catalyzed tandem C–H arylation/decarboxylative annulation between readily available cyclic diaryliodonium salts and benzoic acids. The carboxylic acid functionality can be used as both a directing group for the ortho-C–H arylation and the reactive group for the tandem decarboxylative annulation.     Diaryl ethers containing condensed polycyclic aryl groups were synthesized from arenols in the presence of a catalytic amount of p-chlorobenzenesulfonic acid. Symmetrical binaphthyl, biphenanthryl, and bipyrenyl ethers were obtained in high yields. Unsymmetrical derivatives were also synthesized from 9-phenanthrol and arenols, using combinations of reactive and unreactive substrates.

    An organic emissive layer is provided. Also provided is a device in which the organic emissive layer is disposed between an anode and a cathode. The organic emissive layer includes a phosphorescent material and triphenylene compound or a compound having a repeat unit having a triphenylene moiety. The triphenylene is optionally substituted. The substituents may be the same or different and each is selected from the group consisting of alkyl, aryl, fused aryl, substituted aryl, alkenyl, alkynyl, and heteroalkyl. Triphenylene compounds are also provided.

    A fused aromatic derivative shown by the following formula (1): wherein R a and R b are independently a hydrogen atom or a substituent, p is an integer of 1 to 8 and q is an integer of 1 to 11, and when p and q are two or more, R a s and R b s may be independently the same or different, and adjacent substituents R a s may form a ring, L 1 is a single bond or a substituted or unsubstituted divalent linking group, and Ar 1 is a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group having 6 to 50 ring carbon atoms or a substituted or unsubstituted heteroaryl group having 5 to 50 ring atoms, provided that when L 1 is a single bond and at least one of R a s is not a hydrogen atom, Ar 1 is not a triphenylenyl group, and provided that substituents of L 1 and Ar 1 , and R a and R b contain no amino group.
