    Synthesis and Characterization of Triphenylene-Dione Half-Disc Mesogens
    摘要:
    Novel half-disc mesogens of general structure 6,7,10,11-tetrakis(alkoxy)triphenylene-1,4-dione were synthesized and their phases characterized by polarized microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction. These compounds were found to form hexagonal columnar mesophases upon heating, despite their half-disc molecular shapes. X-ray diffraction suggests that within the mesophases a dimeric mesogenic subunit exists, driven by dipolar forces, in which the molecules are oriented antiparallel to one another. Such a dimer is approximately disc-shaped, and may explain the formation of columnar phases by these half-disc molecules.

    triphenylene dimers linked by a central crown ether core have been synthesized and characterized. The crown ether is most conveniently formed as a final step to permit purification and isolation of ion-free material, and extension of the protocol permits synthesis of triad structures linked though a 27-crown-9 macrocycle. The latter compounds present a new discotic motif that supports mesophase formation.

    Octamethoxy-o-quaterphenyl (8a) was prepared in three steps from 4-bromo-1,2-dimethoxybenzene (5a) employing two base-mediated biaryl couplings. Demethylation of 8a followed by alkylation with decyl bromide gave the tetradecyloxy-o-quaterphenyl (8c).

    The present invention relates to a class of luminescent and conductive polymer compositions having chromophores, and particularly solid films of these compositions exhibiting increased luminescent lifetimes, quantum yields and amplified emissions. These desirable properties can be provided through polymers having rigid groups designed to prevent polymer reorganization, aggregation or &pgr;-stacking upon solidification. These polymers can also display an unusually high stability with respect to solvent and heat exposures. The invention also relates to a sensor and a method for sensing an analyte through the luminescent and conductive properties of these polymers. Analytes can be sensed by activation of a chromophore at a polymer surface. Analytes include aromatics, phosphate ester groups and in particular explosives and chemical warfare agents in a gaseous state. The present invention also relates to devices and methods for amplifying emissions by incorporating a polymer having an energy migration pathway and/or providing the polymer as a block co-polymer or as a multi-layer.
