  A method of preparing a novel non-ionic surfactant usefully employed in a cosmetic composition having the formula R--CHOH--CH.sub.2 --O--CH.sub.2 --CHOH--CH.sub.2 --O].sub.n H wherein R is selected from the group consisting of aliphatic, cycloaliphatic and arylaliphatic radicals and mixtures thereof having 7-21 carbon atoms, n is greater than 1 and equal to or less than 10, the method comprising condensing on an .alpha.-diol having the formula R--CHOH--CH.sub.2 OH wherein R has the above meaning, n moles of glycidol having the formula ##STR1## in the presence of an alkaline catalyst at a temperature of 120.degree.-180.degree. C.
