N-acyl amino acid esters are easily accessible from enamides by cobalt-catalyzed hydroalkoxycarbonylation in moderate to excellent yield. An important reaction parameter for selective carbonylation is the use of low hydrogen partial pressure, which prevents hydrogenation as a side reaction.
