Several polymethyl-1,2-diphenylcyclobutenes have been subjected to photo-oxidation in acetonitrile in the presence of 9,10-dicyanoanthracene and it is possible to isolate the corresponding ozonides, in moderate yields (ca. 13%), apparently formed from oxirans produced in a primary step; 1,4-diketones are not generated from the ozonides under the reaction conditions although they are formed as reaction

Diarylfuroxans were found to give diaryacetylenes upon irradiation at 254 nm. Cyclobutaphenanthrenes were also obtained when reaction was carried out in the presence of alkenes. The acetylenic derivative is supposed to arise by loss of (NO)2 from a diazete-N,N-dioxide. Unimolecular and collision activated dissociation studies by tandem mass spectrometry also support the loss of (NO)2 from diarylfuroxans

3,4,4-tetramethylcyclobutene were investigated. Direct irradiation of this hydrocarbon leads to inefficient cyclization to a dehydrophenanthrene. Irradiation in the presence of diethyl terephthalate gives the cyclobutane radical cation and the ester radical anion. These intermediates were observed by laser flashphotolysis. The cyclobutene radical cation does not rearrange rapidly to the radical cation
