A facile and efficient synthesis of novel seven-membered heterocyclic derivatives containing 3-aminoazepan-2-one backbone is described using 1,4-protected piperazine-2,5-diones and alkynes as starting materials. The reaction may undergo Michael addition, unusual nucleophilic attack to an amide group, and keto-enol tautomerization. The reaction showed different reactivity when using substrates with different protecting groups: it had higher efficiency when using either alkanoyl-protecting group with cesium carbonate as the base, or benzoyl-protecting group with triethylamine as the base, but no reaction when using benzyl or allyl protecting groups with a variety of bases (Et3N, DBU, K2CO3, Cs2CO3, KHCO3, CsHCO3, and KOt-Bu).

A particulate alkaline detergent composition is disclosed which is suitable for washing fabrics and exhibiting good detergency, stability and bleaching while the level of inorganic material deposited on the fabrics is at an acceptably low level. The composition comprises a synthetic detergent active, a mixture of tri-polyphosphate and orthophosphate in the ratio of 20:1 to 3:1 and a mixture of a peroxygen bleach such as perborate and a bleach activator such as tet- raacetylethylenediamine. The phosphates constitute from 10 to 40% of the composition while the bleach system constitutes from 5 to 30%. The amount of pyrophosphate, if any, should be kept below 5% Soap may be added to the composition. The compositions may be prepared by mixing the bleach system and optionally the alkali metal phosphate with a spray dried powder containing the remaining constituents.
A particulate alkaline detergent with unexpectantly good bleaching performance and with reduced phosphorus content contains 5-40% detergent active, 12.5-25% tripolyphosphate, 7.0-36% aluminosilicate builder such as zeolite, 5-30% peroxybleach such as sodium perborate and 0.1 to 15% activator such as TAED, the perborate to TAED ratio being between 2:1 and 15:1. The detergent active may be anionic material or a mixture of an anionic material and a minor amount of nonionic material. The compositions are particularly suitable for containing fluorescers and show surprisingly improved bleaching performance as water hardness increases.

A builder system for detergent compositions comprises 25 to 97% by weight of an aluminosilicate cation-exchange material such as Zeolite A and 3 to 75% by weight, in total, of an organic precipitant builder having a polyvalent anion, for example, an alkyl or alkenyl malonate or succinate, and an organic sequestrant such as a nitrilotriacetate. The ratio of precipitant to sequestrant is 10:1 to 1:10. The builder mix is advantageously used in detergent compositions containing less than 10% inorganic phosphate, and gives good results in zero-phosphate compositions.
Effervescent bleach activator granules for use in washing and/or bleaching compositions comprising a bleach activator, a peroxoborate and a binding material are disclosed. Preferred granules include an alkali metal perborate monohydrate, preferably in a proportion at least equal to the amount of the bleach activator. These granules have the advantage that the reduction of mechanical loss when used in washing machines combined with a fast dissolution of and reaction between the bleach activator and the percompound in close proximity at a high local pH should improve the bleach performance, particularly in the low/medium temperature range, to a substantial degree.
A low phosphate, alumino-silicate built cleaning composition having improved bleach performance is described comprising
a) 15-50% by weight of a water-insoluble alumino-silicate cation exchange material;
b) 3-30% by weight of a peroxide bleach;
c) 0.5-15% by weight of an activator for said peroxide bleach; and
d) 1-15% by weight of a nitrilotriacetic acid compound, wherein the percentage quantities of (a) + 2(d) is between 30 and 55.
