Calcium iodide (CaI2) catalyzes cycloaddition reaction in Nenitzescusynthesis to afford 5-hydroxyindoles from corresponding quinones and enamines. This method introduces CaI2 as a catalyst in performing this type of condensation reaction for the first time and presents advantages in using nontoxic metal, work-up simplicity, functional group tolerance, and can compete with other methods to overcome

In spite of the poor nucleophilicity of its amino group, which is considered to have an ''amide like'' character, 2-amino-1,4-naphthoquinone reacts with beta-dielectrophiles to give 2-oxo- or 4-oxo-1H-1-azaanthracene-9,10-diones.
