  The synthesis and characterization of a series of semiconducting polymers of the polyphenylenevinylene (PPV) type is presented. These new polymers have every second phenylene ring substituted by two alkyl groups of equal length which are hexyl, heptyl, octyl, nonyl, decyl, undecyl, and dodecyl. The polymers were synthesized from the corresponding dialkyldialdehydes by a Horner−Wadsworth−Emmons condensation

  Terephthaldialdimine 1a reacted with alkenes to give 2,6-dialkylated products selectively in moderate to high isolated yields. In the case of terephthaldialdimine 1b having a substituent at site 2 in the phenyl ring, the alkylation takes place selectively at site 6 in the phenyl ring.   A reductive process allows to covalently couple aldehydes on a Au(111) surface. While oxygen desorbs completely during the reaction, a strongly interlinked polyphenylene vinylene derivative is formed, remaining weakly adsorbed on the surface.
