The influence of the length of alkyl substituents on various kinetic, thermodynamic, and spectroscopic properties of 4-(dialkylamino)pyridines has been determined by using a combination of experimental and theoretical methods. The chain-length dependence of these properties has subsequently been analyzed by using a quantitative model for through-bond inductiveeffects.

A n-BuLi triggered practical amination protocol of methoxy pyridine derivatives with aliphaticamines was developed. The reaction could finish in 30 min for primary amines and 10 min for secondary amines. The amination is further highlighted by its excellent reactivity and substrate scope.

The direct reaction of 2- and 4-cyanopyridines with lithiumamides affords good yields of the corresponding aminopyridines via displacement of cyanide. Addition of CsF accelerates the reaction and can lead to significantly higher yields.
N-alkyl-4-(N′,N′-dialkylamino)pyridinium salts: thermally stable phase transfer catalysts for nucleophilic aromatic displacement

N-Alkyl salts of 4-dialkylaminopyridines are effective phase transfer catalysts which are up to 100 times more stable than tetrabutylammonium bromide to conditions encountered in nucleophilic aromatic substitution reactions. These salts are thermally stable to over 300°C, and promote reactions in non-polar solvents (or in the absence of solvent) at temperatures as high as 200°C.
