  Higher alkyl quaternary halide salts of cinnamate esters of the general formula I     wherein R¹ is an alkyl group containing from one to four carbon atoms; R² is an alkyl group containing from one to six carbon atoms; R³ is alkylene containing from two to six carbon atoms; R⁴ is an alkyl group containing from sixteen to twenty-two carbon atoms; and X⁻ is a halogen anion are useful as sunscreen agents. Sunscreen compositions containing same and methods of using are provided.
