A process for producing a purified prostaglandin derivative having a high purity which comprises adding an alkene (1) to cyclopentenone (2) under the action of an alkyl lithium and an organic copper reactant to give an adduct; reacting the adduct with a carboxylic anhydride (4), etc. to give a prostaglandin derivative (6); and then treating the derivative (6) with a nitrogen-containing compound such as 2,2'-bipyridyl to thereby efficiently remove the organic copper reactant employed in the synthesis and by-products derived therefrom.

The pyrolysis under 170–220°C or boiling in DMF of malonanilic acids ethyl esters (2) is accompanied by formation of malonic acids symmetric dianilides (7) with high yields. A possible mechanism for this transformation has been suggested.
