(EN) Composition and method allowing the oxydizing coloration of hair based on at least one substituted phenol, as a coupling compound, having the general formula (FORMULA) wherein R1 represents a hydroxy-alkyl residue with 1 to 4 carbon atoms and R2 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl residue with 1 to 4 carbon atoms; these phenols may also be phenolates. In these coloring compositions, the coupling compounds, among which the preferred ones are 2-hydroxy-methyl-5-methylphenol and 3-((Beta)-hydroxy-ethyl)-6-methyl-phenol, must have a concentration from 0.01 to 3.0% by weight and particularly a concentration from 0.1 to 2.0% by weight. The coupling compounds hereabove described are blue coupling compounds. The coloration shades obtained by using the compositions of the invention are long lasting, give a natural look and are reproducible. The coupling compounds according to the above-indicated formula exhibit favorable dermatological and toxicological characteristics and prevent dyed hair from having the unpleasant and penetrating smell of cresols. (FR) Une composition et un procede permettant la coloration oxydative de cheveux sur la base d'au moins un phenol substitue, en tant que compose copulant, de formule generale (FORMULE) dans laquelle R1 signifie un reste hydroxy-alkyle avec 1 a 4 atomes de carbone et R2 signifie un atome d'hydrogene ou un reste alkyle presentant 1 a 4 atomes de carbone; ces phenols pouvant aussi se presenter sous forme de phenolates. Dans les compositions colorantes les composes copulants selon l'invention, parmi lesquels le 2-hydroxy-methyle-5-methyle-phenol et le 3-((Beta)-hydroxy-ethyle)-6-methyle-phenol sont les preferes, doivent se presenter en une concentration d'environ 0,01 a 3,0% en poids, et en particulier en une concentration de 0,1 a 2,0% en poids. Les composes copulants decrits ci-dessus constituent des copulants de couleur bleue. Les nuances de coloration obtenues par l'utilisation des compositions selon l'invention persistent durablement, assurent un bon port et sont reproductibles. Les composes copulants selon la formule indiquee presentent des caracteres dermatolo-giquement et toxicologiquement favorables et evitent aux cheveux colores l'odeur desagreable et penetrante des cresols.
