    With the aid of an azo directing group, Pd-catalyzed ortho-sp(2) C-H bond activation/functionalization of azoarenes with aryl acyl peroxides has been explored. This transformation provides easy access to regioselectively introducing acyloxyl and aryl groups into azoarenes by simply changing the reaction temperature and solvent.

    The invention is directed to polymerizable vinyl compounds having halogenated aromatic groups and to a method of synthesizing such compounds. In particular, the invention is directed to vinyl aromatic compounds having the formula         P2C=CP-C6X5-nZn, in which (a) P = H, D or mixture thereof; (b) Z = -Y-C6X5, -Y-W-U-[(o-, m-, p-C6X4-CP=CP2)]m , -Y-V and mixtures thereof; (c) independently, Y and U = O, S, NH, or is not present; (d) V and W are respectively a monovalent group and a linking group selected (in each case) from the group consisting of aromatic, polycyclic aromatic (fused-ring), 5- or 6-member heterocyclic aromatic and polycyclic-heterocyclic compounds, and derivatives thereof wherein one or more ring C-H bonds are replaced by C-X bonds, where X = F, Cl, CF3 and Rf, and mixtures thereof, and Rf is a C2-C5 hydrocarbon in which 50% or more of C-H bonds are replaced by C-F bonds; (e) X = F, Cl, CF3 and Rf, and mixtures thereof, and Rf is a C2-C5 hydrocarbon in which 50% or more of C-H bonds are replaced by C-F bonds; and (f) m and n are integers in the range of 1-3. The compounds on the invention, when used as polymeric materials in optical communications devices result in devices with low power losses.

    The oxygenation of 8-aminoquinoline amides by benzoyl peroxide at the C5 position in water is developed in the absence of a transition metal catalyst, affording the desired products in moderate to good yields of up to 88%. Mechanism studies reveal that the reaction would involve a radical process.
