    An article that includes a functionalized copolymer and the use thereof, particularly in a process for binding biomaterials, such as in a process for separating aggregated proteins from monomeric proteins in a biological solution; wherein the article includes: a) a porous substrate; and b) a copolymer covalently attached to the porous substrate, the copolymer comprising a hydrocarbon backbone and a plurality of pendant groups attached to the hydrocarbon backbone, wherein 1) each of a first plurality of pendant groups comprises: (a) at least one acidic group or salt thereof; and (b) a spacer group that directly links the at least one acidic group or salt thereof to the hydrocarbon backbone by a chain of at least 6 catenated atoms; and 2) each of a second plurality of pendant groups comprises: (a) at least one acidic group or salt thereof; and (b) a spacer group that directly links the at least one acidic group or salt thereof to the hydrocarbon backbone by a chain of at least 6 catenated atoms; and wherein the first plurality of pendant groups are different than the second plurality of pendant groups; and wherein a mole ratio of the first plurality of pendant groups to the second plurality of pendant groups is in a range of 95:5 to 5:95.

    A process for separating aggregated proteins from monomeric proteins in a biological solution, the process including: providing at least one filter element having a contacting surface, wherein the filter element comprises filter media comprising: a porous substrate; and disposed on the porous substrate, a polymer comprising a hydrocarbon backbone and a plurality of pendant groups attached to the hydrocarbon backbone, wherein each of a first plurality of pendant groups comprises: (1) at least one acidic group or salt thereof; and (2) a spacer group that directly links the at least one acidic group or salt thereof to the hydrocarbon backbone by a chain of at least 6 catenated atoms; and allowing an initial biological solution to contact the contacting surface of the filter element under conditions effective to separate the aggregated proteins from the monomeric proteins such that a final biological solution includes purified monomeric proteins.

    A system and a method for preparing cycloalkanone are provided. The method includes the steps of: (a) oxidizing cycloalkane to form a mixture containing ketone, alcohol and unreacted cycloalkane; (b) adding to the mixture alkali metal hydroxide or alkali metal carbonate to form a first mixed solution; (c) separating the first mixed solution into a first organic phase solution and a first aqueous phase solution; and (d) extracting the first organic phase solution by water to obtain a second organic phase solution and a second aqueous phase solution; and (e) distilling the second organic phase to separate out cycloalkanone. The method performs phase separation after a mixing step, and then performs water extraction, thereby effectively lowering the contents of the metal salts in the organic phases. Compared with acid-water extraction, the method not only provides better cooling effects but also reduces equipment corrosion, and therefore has the advantage of decreasing the need for sewage treatments.

    This invention provides producing having an objective ketone and/or alcohol by decomposing of a hydrocarbon compound rapidly and selectively having a same number of carbon atoms as a hydrocarbon compound by decomposing a hydroperoxide in a reaction solution obtained from oxidizing the hydrocarbon compound using molecular oxygen of this invention involves, a hydroperoxide decomposition step for decomposing the hydroperoxide into the ketone and/or alcohol by contacting the reaction solution with an aqueous solution containing a carbonate of an alkaline earth metal or a carbonate of an alkali metal and a transition metal compound, a separation step for separating into an oil phase comprising the ketone and/or alcohol, and a water phase comprising the carbonate of an alkaline earth metal or carbonate of an alkali metal and the transition metal compound, a recovery step for recovering the carbonate of an alkali metal or carbonate of an alkaline earth metal and the transition metal compound by combusting the water phase, and a recycling step for recycling to the hydroperoxide decomposition step by dissolving at least the carbonate of the alkali metal or the carbonate of the alkaline earth metal among the recovered substances obtained from the recovery step in water.
