  The reaction of ortho-formyl cinnamates, ortho-formyl cinnamonitrile and ortho-formyl alpha-benzalketones with trifluoromethyltrimethylsilane in the presence of cesium fluoride results in the formation of trifluoromethylated phthalans in good yields.
