Rh<sub>2</sub>(OAc)<sub>4</sub>-Mediated Diazo Decomposition of δ-(<i>N</i>-Tosyl)amino-β-keto-α-diazo Carbonyl Compounds: A Novel Approach to Pyrrole Derivatives

(N-Tosyl)amino substituted β-keto diazo carbonyl compounds have been prepared by reaction of titanium enolate of β-ketodiazoester or -ketone with an activated N-tosylimine. Rh2(OAc)4-catalyzed reaction of the (N-tosyl)amino substituted α-diazocarbonyl compounds leads to the efficient formation of pyrrole derivatives.

The Ti(IV) enolates derivedfrom α-diazo-β-keto esters or ketones efficiently add to TiCl4-activated N-tosylimines to give δ-N-tosylamino substituted α-diazo-β-keto carbonyl compounds. The diazo decomposition of the addition products occurs under Rh2(OAc)4-catalyzed or photoinduced conditions to afford pyrrole or γ-lactam derivatives, both in high yields.
