Processes for making furfural and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural from sugars are provided. The processes can be carried out using a batch process or a continuous mode of operation. An aqueous sugar solution is pressurized with CO2, thereby producing carbonic acid in situ that catalyzes the dehydration reaction to produce furfural from C5 sugars and 5-methylhydroxyfurfural from C6 sugars.
The invention relates to a process of recovering arabinose and optionally other monosaccharides from vegetable fiber rich in heteropolymeric arabinose, such as gum arabic. Said other monosaccharides are typically selected from galactose and rhamnose. The process of the invention comprises controlled hydrolysis of the arabinose-rich vegetable fiber and fractionation of the hydrolysis product to obtain a fraction enriched in arabinose and optionally other product fractions followed by crystallization of arabinose. The invention also relates to a novel method of crystallizing arabinose from biomass-derived material. Furthermore, the invention relates to novel crystalline L-arabinose.

Described herein are processes and enzymes for the enzymatic production of glucaric acid from glucuronic acid, and more specifically the enzymatic production of substituted glucaric acid from substituted glucuronic acid. Advantageously, the process and enzymes described herein make preferential use substituted glucuronic acid obtained from natural sources, such as underutilized hemicellulose stream from wood and agricultural biorefineries, to produce substantially enantiomerically pure substituted D-glucaric acid.
