A novel approach to the synthesis of indoline derivatives is presented. The key cyclization step features the phenyliodine(III) bis(trifluoroacetate)- (PIFA-) mediated formation of a N-acylnitrenium ion and its succeeding intramolecular trapping by the olefin fragment.
