    Effects of the polyfluoroalkyl side-chain on the properties of 1-methyl-3-polyfluoroalkylimidazolium fluorohydrogenate ionic liquids

    A series of 1-methyl-3-polyfluoroalkylimidazolium fluorohydrogenate salts (C(3F3)MIm(FH)(1.7)F, C(4F5)MIm(FH)(1.7)F, C(6)F(9)MIm(FH)(1.8)F, C(8F13)MIm(FH)(2.0)F, and C(10F17)MIm(FH)(2.0)F; the subscript numbers denote the number of carbon and fluorine atoms in the side-chain, respectively, with which the two carbon atoms from the root of the side-chain are not fluorinated) were synthesized and their physicochemical properties, including decomposition temperature, phase transition temperature, density, viscosity, ionic conductivity, and electrochemical stability, were measured. The three salts with relatively short side-chain have melting points below room temperature: C(3F3)MIm(FH)(1.7)F (T-m: 274 K), C(4F5)MIm(FH)(1.7)F (T-g: 186 K), and C(6F9)MIm(FH)(1.8)F (T-m,: 276 K). The other salts, C(8F13)MIm(FH)(2.0)F and C(10F17)MIm(FH)(2.0)F, are in the crystal phase at room temperature. The obtained salts are miscible with water and hydrophobic fluorohydrogenate ionic liquids were not obtained in the present series. Introduction of fluorine atoms results in the increase in the density and viscosity, decrease in the ionic conductivity, and decrease in electrochemical stability against reduction. The liquid crystal phase was observed for C(8F13)MIm(FH)(2.0)F and C(10F17)MIm(FH)(2.0)F according to polarized optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V.   • Anisotropic ionic conductivity in fluorinated ionic liquid crystals suitable for optoelectronic applications

    In this work, we report a library of thirteen fluorinated ionic liquids consisting of iodide salts of 1-alkyl-3-polyfluoroalkyl-imidazolium cations. By changing the length of the alkyl and polyfluoroalkyl pendants, we discovered that particular combinations of these result in compounds showing a mesophase. The nature and the molecular arrangement of the mesophase are characterised by polarised optical microscopy and powder X-ray diffraction analysis, among others. We demonstrate that, after the addition of I2 to generate the I−/I3− redox couple, anisotropic ionic conductivity takes place along preferential pathways in the lamellar structure of the mesophase. Notably, the addition of I2 does not suppress the mesophase temperature range, contrary to previously reported systems. Furthermore, the tendency of these materials to supercool allows the molecular arrangement in the mesophase to be retained in a solid film at ambient temperatures. Finally, we demonstrate their applicability as a quasi-solid electrolyte by preparing dye-sensitised solar cells with power conversion efficiencies comparable to the previous reports.

    A family of fluorinated imidazolium salts showing liquid–crystalline properties in a wide temperature range was developed. These fluorinated ionic liquid crystals, due to their intrinsic hydrophobicity, high thermal stability and good conductivity, are suitable candidates to be used as electrolytes in electrochemical devices such as Dye Sensitized Solar Cell (DSSC) or lithium batteries.
