wherein each of R¹, R² and R³, which may be the same or different, represents a hydrogen atom; a halogen atom; a C₁-C₆ alkyl group; a C₁-C₆ alkoxy group; a a halo-C₁-C₆ alkyl group; a halo-C₁-C₆ alkoxy group; a (C₁-C₆ alkoxy)carbonyl group; a C₁-C₆ alkylthio group; a C₁-C₆ alkylamino group; a di(C₁-C₆ alkyl)amino group; a phenyl group; or a phenoxy group,
each of R⁴ and R⁵, which may be the same or different, represents a hydrogen atom or a C₁-C₆ alkyl group, or R⁴ and R⁵ are bonded together at their ends to form a C₂-C₅ alkylene group,

X represents CH or a nitrogen atom, a method for producing the same and their use as herbicides.
The N-acyldihydroquinoline derivatives have herbicidal activity and selectivity between crops and weeds and therefore, can be used as an active ingredient for herbicides.
