    The present invention relates to a calixarene-based glycosylated compound (I) having the formula: (I) wherein D is independently selected in the group comprising a —CH 2 -group, an oxygen atom, a sulphur atom, a sulfinyl group or a sulfonyl group, E is independently selected in the group comprising a hydrogen, an alkyl having from 1 to 10 carbon atoms, an aryl having from 6 to 20 carbon atoms, a nitrogen dioxide group, an azide group, an amino group, a guanidinium group, a halogen atom, a —CH 2 R group wherein R is a hydroxyl, a halogen, an amino group, a N(alkyl) 2 group, a NH(alkyl) group, or E represents a —CO—R′ wherein R′ is a hydrogen atom, a hydroxyl group or an amino, B represents a A-C group wherein A is independently selected in the group comprising an oxygen atom, a sulfur atom, a NH group or a (CH 2 ) i group, i being an integer from 1 to 10, C is independently selected in the group comprising a hydrogen, an alkyl, an alkenyl, an alkynyl, or C is a group of formula (II). The present invention also relates to a pharmaceutical composition characterized in that it comprises the said calixarene-based glycosylated compound (I), in combination with pharmaceutically acceptable carriers or diluents. The present invention also relates to the use of the said calixarene-based glycosylated compound (I) or the said pharmaceutical composition, for the manufacture of a drug intended to prevent or treat bacterial infections from pathogens that use lectins in the first steps of infection.

    A compound used in the conventional enzymatic reactions and mass spectrometry methods needs to be altered with respect to the structure thereof as a substrate compound, such as the length of an alkyl chain contained therein, depending on the type of a target enzyme, and therefore has the problem that the conditions for the mass spectrometry on a product compound are undesirably varied and the sensitivity is deteriorated. In the present invention, a compound is provided, which can be used in an enzymatic reaction and a microanalysis method both for detecting a trace component stably and with high sensitivity. The compound according to the present invention is characterized by having a nitrogen atom, an amide bond and a glycosidic bond at specific sites, respectively, has high reactivity with an enzyme, and can provide a compound capable of being detected very easily with a mass spectrometer.

    Cells synthesizing DNA are detected in a rapid, nonradioactive assay using the monoclonal antibody reagent secreted by the hybridoma produced by fusion of a myeloma cell, preferably murine plasmacytoma cell, with an animal antibody producing cell, preferably a mouse spleen cell, immunized with the conjugate of 5-bromouridine or 5-iodouridineand an albumin-carrier molecule. The antibody is specific for 5-bromodeoxyuridine or 5-iododeoxyuridine.

    A test for the differential detection of suspected N. gonorrhoeae (N.g.) and N. meningitidis (N.m.) in provided by contacting a suspected sample with a lectin, preferably wheat germ agglutinin and either soy bean agglutinin or STA potato lectin. An agglutinin reaction is a positive indication of the presence of such microorganisms. Separate portions of the specimen may be contaced with fast substrates specific for (a) N.g., (b) N.m., and (c) B. catarrhalis. Suitable fast substrates are proline naphthylamide, gamma glutamyl naphthylamide, and glycyl prolyl naphthylamide, respectively, each substituted with an electron donating group at the 4-position, 6-position, or both. Another portion of the specimen may be reacted with a substrate for beta-galactosidase enzyme, a positive reaction being an indication that the specimen contains N.lactimica. Autoagglutination, which could otherwise give a false positive in the lectin test, may be prevented by pretreatment of the specimen with DNA'ase and/or an anhydride such as succinic anhydride.
