A highly efficient and mild method for the synthesis of 1,5-hexadienes, nickel-catalyzed reactions of Boc-protected allyl alcohols with homoallyl alcohols, has been developed. Nickel-mediated retro-allylation allows for the use of homoallyl alcohols as allylmetal equivalents in the synthesis of 1,5-hexadienes.

A stereoselective polyene cyclisation cascade was enabled by using HFIP as a solvent. The process is triggered by a cation generated from an alcohol in situ and leads to the formation of three new C-C bonds and up to five new stereocenters as a single diastereomer. The cyclised products can be derivatised to obtain steroidal analogues in a single step.
