    Phenylthio(trimethylsilyl)methane, phenylthiosbis(trimethylsily)methane, methoxy(trimethysily)methane, and methoxybis(trimethylsilyl)methane are depronated and the resulting anions are alkylated with electrophiles such as organic halides. The alkylation products are readily converted into the corresponding dimethyl acetals or methyl esters by electrochemical oxidation in methanol.

    A robust and highly effective tandem hydroformylation–acetalization of olefins using a Brønsted acid–Rh bifunctional catalyst (ARBC) in ionic liquid–alcohol systems is reported. The key feature of the ARBC is its use of a zwitterionic phosphine ligand bearing an amino acid tag. This novel ARBC shows an excellent catalytic efficiency and a long service life without a significant drop in both the hydroformylation efficiency and the acetalization efficiency or Rh loss for more than seventeen cycles. We believe that the long-term high activity and acetal selectivity mainly benefit from the synergy between the acidic active site and the Rh active site on the ARBC and the highly effective immobilization and recycling of ARBC in ionic liquid–alcohol systems due to the strong affinity of ARBC for the ionic liquid.

    IrIII-Lewis acid for tandem hydroformylation-acetalization of olefins. The best result was obtained over L5-based IrCl3⋅3H2O catalytic system which corresponded to 97% conversion of 1-hexene along with 92% selectivity to the target acetals free of any additive.     Disclosed is a thermochromic microencapsulated pigment which comprises as four essential components (a) an electron-donating chromatic organic compound, (b) an electron-accepting compound, (c) a reaction medium determining the temperatures at which the color reactions of component (a) with component (b) take place, and (d) a color change temperature regulator, the color change temperature regulator (d) comprising one or more compounds selected from the group consisting of esters, alcohols, ketones, acid amides, hydrocarbons, and fatty acids and having a melting point Y (°C) satisfying the relationship (X+30)°C≤Y≤200°C, wherein X (°C) is the melting point of component (c), and the four essential components being microencapsulated.

    Provided are a writing instrument produced at a lower cost than conventional thermochromic writing instruments utilizing frictional heat, slim like a pencil and not bulky because it contains an ink directly in a barrel thereof, and excellent in portability; and a set of the writing instruments. The writing instrument 1 is obtained by directly filling a barrel thereof with an ink 2 which becomes colorless or colored, or undergoes a color change by heating and an ink follower 5 following the ink with its consumption; firmly fixing a writing tip portion 3 to the end of the barrel directly or via a relay member; and disposing a friction body 6 having an elasticity at the rear end portion of the barrel. The writing instrument set has a plurality of the writing instruments respectively different from each other in color tone.
