    Die Telomerisation wird in wäßriger Phase so durchgeführt, daß man praktisch wasserunlösliche Telogene durch Zusatz von solchen Mengen an oberflächenaktiven Verbindungen, die eine hydrotrope Wirkung entfalten, solubilisiert und anschließend telomerisiert. Das Verfahren läßt sich mit wasserlöslichen Acrylverbindungen durchführen. Telogene sind 1 bis 4 Mercaptogruppen sowie 1 bis 2 Hydroxylgruppen/Mol enthaltende Verbindungen mit 3 bis 30 Kohlenstoffatomen. Als oberflächenaktive Verbindungen sind ethoxylierte nichtionische Tenside bevorzugt, weiter sulfatierte Addukte von 2 bis 40 Mol Ethylenoxid an primäre oder sekundäre Fettalkohole oder Alkyl (C6 bis C9)-phenole beziehungsweise deren wasserlösliche Salze, ferner quaternäre Alkylammoniumverbindungen. Die Reaktionsprodukte können direkt als Dispergiermittel in wäßrigen Phasen verwendet werden.

    A process for producing polythiobisphenols which comprises: reacting a phenol having the general formula or wherein each R independently represents a hydrogen, a halogen or an alkyl, with sulfur monochloride in a polar organic solvent in the presence of a nitrogen-containing organic compound as a catalyst which is selected from the group consisting of tertiary amines, quaternary ammonium, alkylated acid amides and heteroaromatic compounds, in amounts of about 1-30 % by weight based on the amount of the phenol used. As a catalyst, bromine or an alkali metal halide is also usable. A novel process for producing mercaptophenols by the hydrogenolysis of polythiobisphenols in the presence of a nickel catalyst is also disclosed. Raney nickel catalyst which is in advance poisoned with an organosulfur compound in which the sulfur atom has unshared electron pairs is especially effective as a catalyst.

    Provided are polyvinyl ester macromonomers (A) having excellent polymerizability and highly controlled composi­tion, structure and distribution of polymerization degree. Also provided are polyvinyl alcohol macromonomers (B) obtained by solvolysis of the above polyvinyl ester macromonomers (A) and having excellent polymerizability and highly controlled composition, structure and distribution of polymerization degree. Further provided are polymers (C) obtained by polymeri­zation of the above polyvinyl ester macromonomers (A) and containing units from polyvinyl ester macromonomers having highly controlled composition, structure and distribution of polymerization degree. These polymers (C) are useful as compatibility improving agents, surface improving agents and like agents. Still further provided are polymers (D) obtained by solvolysis of the above polymers (C) or by polymerization or copolymerization of the above polyvinyl alcohol macro­monomers (B) and containing units from polyvinyl alcohol macromonomers having highly controlled composition, structure and distribution of polymerization degree. These polymers (D) are useful for decreasing viscosity of aqueous solutions of polymers at high concentrations, improving surface, preventing static charge and the like.

    A novel process for producing mercaptophenols by the hydrogenolysis of polythiobisphenols in the presence of a nickel catalyst is disclosed. Raney nickel catalyst which is in advance poisoned with an organosulfur compound in which the sulfur atom has unshared electron pairs is especially effective as a catalyst. A process for producing polythiobisphenols which comprises: reacting a phenol having the general formula wherein each R independently represents a hydrogen, a halogen or an alkyl, with sulfur monochloride in a polar organic solvent in the presence of a nitrogen-containing organic compound as a catalyst which is selected from the group consisting of tertiary amines, quaternary ammoniums, alkylated acid amides and heteroaromatic compounds, in amounts of about 1-30 % by weight based on the amount of the phenol used. As a catalyst, bromine or an alkali metal halide is also usable.
