The photochemical extrusion of CO from cycloheptadienones occurs stereospecifically by the same axisymmetric conrotatory mode seen in thermal extrusion of SO/sub 2/ from the analogous sulfones. Since few reactions of this type have been studied, it remains to be seen what factors control the course of cheletropic fragmentations, particularly those induced by light.
