The preparation of magnesium, zinc or lithium malonic or acetoacetic type enolates through halogen-metalinterconversion or direct reaction of a metal on the appropriate halogenated compound is reported. The properties of these new reagents (electrophilicity, nucleophilicity and stability) are compared to those of gem-halogenated organometallics and unchelated enolates.
