  Polyglycidyl epoxy resins are modified to have a blocked isocyanate moiety bound to the resin backbone through an oxazolidone ring by reacting the epoxy resin with an asymmetrically blocked diisocyanate. Further reaction with a cationic active hydrogen compound gives a modified epoxy resin having a cationic group in addition to the blocked isocyanate moieties. The modified epoxy resins are incorporated into cathodic electrodeposition paint as a crosslinker or cationic binder resin or pigment dispersing agent.

  Diglycidyl ether epoxy resins are reacted with a prepolymer produced from an organic diisocyanate and a bifunctional active hydrogen compound having a soft segment whose terminal isocyanate groups have been blocked to chain-extend the epoxy resin with the prepolymer. The chain-extended epoxy resin is then reacted with a cationic active hydrogen compound alone or incombination with an aliphatic monoalcohol, alkylphenol, glycol monoether or bisphenol to open the terminal epoxy rings of the chain extended epoxy resin. The modified epoxy resin thus produced is dispersed in an aqueous medium containing a neutralizing agent together with a crosslinker to give a cathodic electrodeposition paint having improved impact strength and other properties.

  A cathodic electrodeposition paint containing a cationically modified epoxy resin and a crosslinker dispersed in an acidic aqueous medium is disclosed. The paint contains an auxiliary resin component capable of improving the surface smoothness of the cured paint films. The auxiliary resin is a reaction product produced by reacting a t-alkylphenol novolac epoxy resin with an active hydrogen compound to open all epoxy rings. When the auxiliary resin has a hydroxyl group introduced by the reaction with the active hydrogen compound, a lactone or alkylene oxide is addition reacted with the hydroxyl group for grafting a soft segment to the auxiliary resin. By grafting a soft segment, the auxiliary resin improves not only the surface smoothness but also the impact strength of the paint films.

  A facile preparation of polymer bound 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide (P-EDC) from commercially available starting materials is described. The P-EDC was found to be a convenient and general reagent for coupling of a variety of amines with diverse carboxylic acids.
