The base catalyzed addition of hydroperoxides to oxiranes is restricted to ethylene oxide and alkyl substituted oxiranes. With increasing substitution the yields of β-hydroxy dialkyl peroxides decrease due to fragmentation. Oxiranes with electron withdrawing substituents do not react. The addition is carried out in the heterogenous system tetrachloroethylene/water with optimal yields. The reaction

A novel dialkyl peroxide is disclosed which is represented by the formula:
wherein R₁ and R₂ independently stand for a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, R₃ stands for an alkyl group of 1 to 5 carbon atoms, X stands for an alkylene group of 1 to 3 carbon atoms, -C(O)-, -CH₂-(O-CH₂-CHR₄)m-OC(O)- [wherein R₄ stands for a hydrogen atom or a methyl group and m stands for an integer in the range of 0 to 10], or -C(O)-(O-CH₂-CHR₅)n-OC(O)- (wherein R₅ stands for a hydrogen atom or a methyl group and n stands for an integer in the range of 1 to 10). A composition for the production of a cross-linked ethylene type polymer comprises the dialkyl peroxide and an ethylene type polymer. An electric power cable excelling in electrical characteristics (AC breakdown strength) comprises a conductor and a resin layer deposited on the periphery of the conductor and formed of a cross-linked ethylene type polymer obtained by using the dialkyl peroxide as a cross-linking agent.
