    The first group of fully characterised mesogenic (E,E)-1,4-diarylbuta-1,3-dienes, substituted in the para-position of one aryl ring by an alkoxy-group and in the para-position of the other aryl group by a cyano- or halogeno-group has been prepared by a Wadsworth–Emmons procedure; their physical properties of high birefringence and low viscosity in combination make them particularly suitable for use in liquid crystal display devices when mixed with known liquid crystalline materials.

    An ink composition is provided that includes a compound represented by Formula (I) or (II). (In Formulae (I) and (II), R 1 and R 2 independently denote a monovalent substituent, R 3 to R 6 independently denote a hydrogen atom or a monovalent substituent, n denotes an integer of 0 to 5, and n′ denotes an integer of 0 to 5; n and n′ are not both 0, when n is 2 or greater a plurality of R 1 s may be identical to or different from each other, and when n′ is 2 or greater a plurality of R 2 s may be identical to or different from each other.) There are also provided an inkjet recording method employing the ink composition, and a process for producing a lithographic printing plate, the process including discharging the ink composition onto a hydrophilic support. A printed material and a lithographic printing plate thus obtained are also included in the present invention.
