Palladium-catalyzed cyclization of polycyclic aromatic o-(arylmethyl)phenol triflate esters takes place with unexpected sulfur–oxygen bond cleavage to furnish polycyclic xanthenes. These are the first examples of Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling of aryl triflate esters with arenes to form diaryl ethers.
