  (Z)-9-Tetradecenyl nitrate and (Z)-8-tridecenyl nitrate have been identified in volatiles from virgin female cotton leafperforator moths, Bucculatrix thurberiella, and shown to elicit electroantennogram responses from male moths. A 100:2 blend of the synthetic compounds is highly attractive to male moths in the field, and these compounds are proposed to be components of the female sex pheromone.

  Methods for the preparation of alkenes including insect pheromones are described. The methods include homologation reactions employing reagents such as 1,3-diesters, epoxides, cyanoacetates, and cyanide salts for elongation of starting materials and intermediates by one or two carbon atoms.   (Z)-Alkenols and Their acetates have been synthesized by the Wittig reaction of (ω-hydroxyalkyl)triphenylphosphonium salts with alkanals by a convenient procedure. The geometrical purity of the products was evaluated to be no less than 95% of the (Z)-configu-ration by means of GLC with a glass capillary column coated with CHDMS.
