    The present invention provides a novel production method which enables obtain a phosphorus compound having both an aromatic substituent and a phosphorinane backbone, without using an expensive hydrogen halide scavenger, without going through a complicated post treatment step or a step of recovering a solvent, and with a favorable yield andpurity. In the present invention, step (1) of allowing phosphorus oxytrihalide to react with a phenol compound or naphthol compound at a molar ratio of 1.1-3.0:1 in the presence of metal halide, and removing unreacted phosphorus oxytrihalide, to produce a mono-substituted phosphorodihalidate; and step (2) of allowing the mono-substituted phosphorodihalidate obtained in the step (1) to react with a diol compound, at a 0.90 to 0.99 molar equivalent based on 1 mole of the halogen atom in the mono-substituted phosphorodihalidate so as to perform a dehydrohalogenation reaction, to obtain a phosphorus compound represented by Formula (V).

    An animal collar is provided comprising an elongate flexible strap (2) preferably of plastics material which may contain an ectoparasiticide. At one end of the strap fastening means (4) are provided having a passageway (10) with spaced apart opposing walls (12, 14) extending parallel to the strap through which the other end of the strap may be passed to form a loop. The passageway is provided with a hole (16) in its wall in which one of a number of projections (8) on the strap may be located to secure the loop. The strap is further provided with an extendable portion (70) which by means of frangible elements holding the ends of the slits in the strap together enables the strap to be lengthened increasing the loop size but maintaining an integral loop when a predetermined choking tension is applied to the loop breaking some of the frangible elements.

    Polymer film, coating, and molded article elements for use in a display device are described which comprise a polymer phase having molecularly dispersed therein an acid scavenger compound, a hindered aminc light stabilizer compound and a hindered phenol antioxidant compound, wherein the hindered amine light stabilizer compound and the hindered phenol antioxidant compound are present at a weight ratio of from 20:1 to 1:20, and the weight ratio of the acid scavenger compound to the total concentration of hindered amine light stabilizer compound and hindered phenol antioxidant compound is from 10:1 to 1:10. Use of a combination of an acid scavenger and a combination of two radical scavenger antioxidants dispersed in a polymer phase in accordance with the invention enables enhanced stabilization of the polymer when exposed to high heat and/or humidity condition, which has been found to be especially desirable when applied to polymer layers laminated into displays (e.g., polarizers in liquid crystal displays).

    Ultraviolet light absorbing polymer film, coating, or molded article UV filter elements are described which comprise a polymer phase having molecularly dispersed therein a) a first ultraviolet absorbing dibenzoylmethane compound of formula (I) where R1 through R5 are each independently hydrogen, halogen, nitro, or hydroyxl, or further substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, alkoxy, acyloxy, ester, carboxyl, alkyl thio, aryl thio, alkyl amine, aryl amine, alkyl nitrile, aryl nitrile, arylsulfonyl, or 5-6 member heterocylce ring groups, and b) a second ultraviolet light absorbing compound which absorbs ultraviolet light at a wavelength for which the first compound is deficient at absorbing. In particular embodiments, the second ultraviolet light absorbing compound may comprise a hydroxyphenyl-s-triazine, hydroxyphenylbenzotriazole, formamidine, benzoxazinone, or benzophenone compound. In a specific embodiment of the invention, the above UV absorbing compounds are employed in cellulose acetate film for the fabrication of a protective film for polarizers for use in display applications.
