    Potentiometric and thermal conductimetric studies on salicylidene Girard-P hydrazone complexes of divalent Co, Ni, Cu and Zn salts

    Salicylidene Girard-P hydrazone [H(2)L]Cl reacts with divalent cobalt, nickel, copper and zinc ions to form mono-ligand complexes of the type [ML . H2O]Cl . nH(2)O and [(CuL)(2)]Cl-2. The formation constants of the complexes ML were determined in 50% (v/v) aqueous ethanol solution at an ionic strength l=0.1 M KCl and at 25+/-0.1 degrees C. The solid complexes and the ligand were subjected to differential thermal analysis and the DC electrical conductivities were measured at varying temperatures. The results obtained were explained and discussed in terms of the proposed semiconductive behaviour of the complexes and the probable occurrence of a phase transition. The activation energies (Delta E) were calculated for the ligand and the complexes; that of the ligand was higher than those of the complexes.

    A series of novel mono- and binuclear copper(II) complexes with substituted salicylaldehyde acyl-hydrazones H2L of the formula CuL center dot xH2O (x = 0 and 1) and [Cu(HL)](ClO4)(CH3OH) were synthesized. The isolated dimeric complexes of copper acetate were found to exist as isomers with different bridging atoms. In dimers showing a superexchange between the paramagnetic centers through bridging phenoxide O atoms, the anti ferromagnetic exchange couplings were much stronger than those in complexes with bridging O atoms of the a-oxyazine fragment.
