In the course of our screening program for acyl-CoA: cholesterol acyltransferase (ACAT) inhibitors from Korean herbal medicines, ACAT inhibitors were isolated from the hairy roots of Panax ginseng (Araliaceae) and identified as panaxynol, panaxydol, panaxydiol, and panaxytriol. These active compounds inhibit rat liver ACAT with IC50 values of 94, 80, 45 and 79 µM, respectively.
