High Yield Phase Transfer N-alkylation of Some Benzodiazepines by Esters of ω-Halo Acids

Different 1,4-benzodiazepinyl acetic and propionic acids were prepared by hydrogenolysis of benzyl or hydrolysis of the corresponding ethyl esters which were obtained by phase transfer alkylation of respective amides with benzyl bromoacetate and benzyl or ethyl 2-bromopropionate.
1,4-benzodiazepin-2,5-diones have been synthesized in good overall yields by two routes, the first one by cyclisation of dipeptides prepared from Boc anthranilic acid and alpha-amino acid methyl esters, the second one by reaction of N-carboxy alpha-amino acid anhydrides with Boc anthranilic acid.
