    A new synthetic route to the bicylic pentaalkylcyclopentadienes 1,2,3-trimethylbicyclo[4.3.0]-nonadiene (NDH) and 1,2,3-trimethylbicyclo[10.3.0] pentadecadiene (PDDH) is reported. These ligands react directly and in good yields with Fe(CO)5, Mo(CO)6, Cr(CO)6 and RhCl3.xH2O to form dimeric peralkylcyclopentadienyl complexes, but can also, after deprotonation with (n)BuLi and further treatment with TiCl3 or FeCl2, be converted to the complexes (ND)2TiCl2, (PDD)2TiCl2 and (ND)2Fe. (ND)2Fe was characterized by a crystal-structure analysis. The complex surprisingly exhibits an ecliptical conformation of the five-membered rings, in which the relative orientation of the anellated six-membered rings deviates by 72-degrees from the ideally eclipsed conformation.

    ketones with 1,3-dienes in the presence of CeCl3–SnCl2 in tetrahydrofuran is found to give the corresponding [3+4] cycloadduct in fair to good yields under mild conditions. Furan and cyclopentadiene serve as highly efficient receptors of the oxyallyl intermediate to give bicyclic cycloadducts. The reaction of 2,4-dibromo-3-pentanone with isoprene gives both [3+4] and [3+2] cycloadducts. [3+2] Cycloaddition

    A process for producing a crosslink-cyclized cyclopentadiene, comprising the steps of reacting a cyclopentenone with an alkali metal hydride to thereby reduce the cyclopentenone (reduction step A) into a cyclopentenol; and reacting the cyclopentenol with a dehydrating agent to thereby dehydrate the cyclopentenol (dehydration step B) into a crosslink-cyclized cyclopentadiene of the general formula (III): 1 wherein each of R 1 and R 2 independently represents a hydrogen atom or a linear or branched saturated alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, n is an integer of 3 to 10, and the broken line in the 5-membered ring denotes that the 5-membered ring has two double bonds.
