    The present invention comprises methods and compositions for antimicrobial devices comprising metal containing compositions which are resistant to heat and light discoloration. The metal containing compositions may comprise salts or complexes of silver, copper or zinc. In one aspect the compositions comprise silver salts. In another aspect, the compositions comprise silver complexes. In one aspect, the metal salts may comprise metal salts of saccharin, acesulfame, long chain fatty acids, and alkyl dicarboxylic acids. The compositions further comprise polymers which form salts or complexes with silver, copper or zinc. The methods of the present invention comprise treating devices with the metal containing compositions, including, but not limited to, such devices as woven wound care materials, catheters, patient care devices, and collagen matrices. The present invention further comprises treatment of humans and animals with the antimicrobial devices described herein.

    A polymer prepared from monomers A, Band C in random recurring units wherein: A is an acrylonitrile monomer; B is a hydrophobic ethylenically unsaturated monomer; C is an ionically charged vinyl monomer; A being from 10 to 90 weight percent of said polymer; B being from 5 to 40 weight percent of said polymer except that when B is a vinyl halide monomer, B is 10 to 89.9 weight percent of said polymer; and C being from 0.1 to 10 weight percent of said polymer. The polymer is useful in preparing latex compositions that can be coated on photographic elements as protective overcoats.

    A method for effecting enzymatic reactions can be carried out using a microporous enzymatic reactor (2) which comprises a porous support (4) having thereon a crosslinked polymeric membrane (8) containing solubilizing groups and having an enzyme attached thereto. In a preferred embodiment, the membrane is composed of polymers prepared from acrylamide or methacrylamide monomers containing active methylene groups, and solubilizing ethylenically unsaturated monomers. The method is carried out by causing a feed stream (6) containing a substrate for the enzyme in a first solvent to flow rapidly and continuously over the surface of the membrane. A product of the enzymatic reaction occurring in the membrane is collected in a product stream (10) containing a second solvent which is immiscible with the first solvent, the product stream being separated from the feed stream by the enzymatic membrane.

    Useful materials for diagnostic tests, affinity chromatography, enzymatic reactions and immunoassays are prepared by covalently attaching reactive compounds containing reactive amino or sulfhydryl groups to polymeric particles having carboxyl groups on the outer surfaces. Such reactive compounds include biologically reactive species, such as enzymes, polypeptides and proteins. This attachment is carried out using carbamoylonium compounds which react with the carboxyl groups to form intermediate reactive groups which then react with the amino or sulfhydryl groups to form a covalent linkage between particle and reactive compound.
