Isolactosamine derivatives of formula 2, the synthesis of isolactosamine by hydrogenolysis of said derivatives and the use of isolactosamine in the synthesis of lacto-N-biose containing oligosaccharides, through the steps of masking the amino group of isolactosamine with a suitable protecting group, protecting the OH-groups, activating the anomeric position to obtain a lacto-N-biosyl donor and coupling the lacto-N-biosyl donor to a desired sugar moiety, are also disclosed.
