Functional tungstenocene alkyl hydrides with ester or nitrile groups attached to the α-position of the alkyl group (e.g. Cp2WH(CHMeCO2Me) react with LiAlH4 to give olefin complexes (e.g. Cp2W(CH2CHMe). Similarly, functional olefin complexes are reduced to give alkyl compounds. Thus, the acrylic ester complex Cp2W(CH2CHCO2Me) affords the tungstenacyclobutane Cp2W(CH2)3 and the fumaric ester complex
