    Electrosynthesis of Unsymmetrical Polyaryls by a SRN1-Type Reaction

    Unsymmetrical polyaryls are electrosynthesized in liquid ammonia by a single-step S(RN)1 reaction in the presence of a redox mediator starting from aromatic halides and 2,6-di-tert-butyl phenoxide. With monoaryl halides activated by electron-withdrawing substituents (N of pyridyl or quinolyl, trifluoromethyl, cyano, sulfone, ester, ketone, alkyl sulfide, N+ of anilinium), biaryls are obtained in good yields (between 50 and 95%). The yields of ter- and quateraryls are lower (40% maximum). The reaction is extended to other ortho-disubstituted phenols. Elimination reactions of the tert-butyl groups from the products are achieved by a Friedel-Crafts reaction using either trifluoromethanesulfonic acid or aluminum trichloride as catalysts.

    Production of aromatic polyethers by reacting i) a mixture of a bisphenol and a dihalobenzenoid compound or ii) a halophenol, in which dihalobenzenoid compound or halophenol the halogen atoms are activated by ortho or para -SO2- or -CO- groups, with an alkali metal (bi)-carbonate, wherein the reaction is carried out in the absence of a solvent and in the presence of an infusible particulate support substance, preferably inorganic or polymeric, yielding a reaction medium in the form of a free-flowing powder by the end of the reaction.

    Polyaryletherketones are prepared by polymerisation of a halogen-containing aryl ketone in the presence of a stoichiometric excess of a base and a copper salt. The halogen-containing aryl ketone may be 4-chloro-4'-hydroxybenzophenone. A basic copper salt may be used but the base used to provide the excess of base is an alkali metal hydroxide, carbonate or bicarbonate.

    Aromatic polyethers are produced by polycondensing monomers containing phenolic groups and aromatic halogen, at least some of the aromatic halogen - containing monomers being free of activating groups such as -CO- or -SO2-, in the presence of a copper-containing catalyst and of a basic alkali metal compound present in stoichiometric excess relative to phenolic groups and copper. The products include new polyethers, particularly containing the repeating unit Ph1-PH1-O alone or with ketone containing or sulphone-containing units, where Ph' is phenylene.

    In making polyarylethers or polyarylthioethers by reaction of thiophenols with aromatic halogen compounds, raw polycondensation product is freed of alkali halide by adjusting its composition and/or temperature so that it dissolves at least 0.5% w/w of water and holds the polymer in solution, and then contacting it in liquid form with hot water, preferably under pressure.

    A method for preparing sulfones represented by the following general formula: (wherein R' represents a lower alkyl group, an aryl group or an aryl group whose nucleus has substituents; and R'' may be identical to or different from R' and represents a lower alkyl group, an aryl group or an aryl group whose nucleus has substituents) comprises the step of condensing 4-hydroxybiphenyl or sulfonic acid esters of 4-hydroxybiphenyl represented by the following general formula: (wherein R is the same as R' or R'' defined above) with sulfonyl chlorides represented by the following general formula:         R'SO₂Cl (wherein R' is the same as that defined above) in the presence of a Lewis acid or a superstrong acid; and a method for preparing sulfones represented by the following general formula: (wherein R' is the same as that defined above) or alkali salts thereof comprises the step of saponifying the foregoing sulfones in the presence of an acid or alkali. These methods permits the production of sulfones or salts thereof in high yield and high quality through relatively simple operations. Thus, useful sulfones having biphenyl structures can be supplied at a low cost and in an industrial scale.
