    Cyclooctadiene derivative of the following formula (1): wherein A1, A2, A3 and A4 each independently represent COOR5 (where R5 represents a hydrogen atom, a C1-C10 alkyl group, a phenyl group, a C7-C12 aralkyl group or CONR6R7 (where R6 and R7 each independently represent a hydrogen atom, a C1-C10 alkyl group or a phenyl group), or A1 and A2, and/or A3 and A4 may be combined together to represent group(s) of: in which X represents an oxygen atom or NR8 where R8 represents a hydrogen atom, a C1-C10 alkyl group or a phenyl group), R0, R1 , R2, R3 and R4 each independently represent a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, a hydroxyl group and an C1-C10 alkyl group, the symbol --- represents a single or double bond, and when it is a double bond, then R1 and R3 each independently may represent an oxygen atom; provided that the case where all of R0, R1, R2, R3 and R4 represent hydrogen atoms at the same time is excluded, and agrohorticultural fungicides, antimold agents and antithrombocytic agents containing said derivatives. The compounds have superior fungicidal activity, antimold activity and activity for preventing platelet aggregation, and are useful as an agrohorticultural fungicide, an antimold agent and an antithrombocytic agent.

    The present invention relates to a novel pyrimidine compound represented by the following Formulas (1) and (2). These compounds are useful as components for liquid crystal compositions, and a liquid crystal composition containing the compound of the present invention provides a liquid crystal element having excellent characteristics such as high speed response, orientation and high contrast ratio. wherein R1 and R2 each represent a linear or branched alkyl group, alkoxyl group having 1 to 24 carbon atoms, or a linear or branched alkenyl group or alkenyloxy group having 2 to 24 carbon atoms each of which may be substituted; R3 and R4 each represent a linear or branched alkyl group or alkenyl group having 3 to 24 carbon atoms each of which may be substituted; A1 and A2 each represent a substituted or unsubstituted 1,4-phenylene group, a pyridine-2,5-diyl group or a trans-1,4-cyclohexylene group; X1 and X2 each represent a single bond, a -COO- group, a -OCO- group, a -OCH2- group or a -CH2O- group; Y1 and Y2 each represent a -COO- group or a -OCO- group; and a, b, p, q, m and n each represent 0 or 1, provided that a + b + p + q is not 0.

The addition of this naphthalene compound to a liquid crystal composition makes it possible to improve various characteristics such as the high speed response property of the liquid crystal composition and the temperature dependency of the response time. The above naphthalene compound is useful as a liquid crystal material for liquid crystal compositions, particularly ferroelectric liquid crystal compositions.
