  Synthesis of C-alkyl and functionalised C-alkyl glycosides is achieved by desulphurisation of the corresponding thiophene glycosides, wherein ‘thiophene’ is utilised as a masked four-carbon synthon. Thiophene glycosides in turn were prepared from the corresponding sugar lactols.
