A novel aminoacid synthon in the form of boronoalanine (AlaB) suitable for umpolung peptide/protein functionalization is described. It is demonstrated that AlaB can be incorporated into peptides and proteins, and remains stable under solid-phase synthesis, native chemical ligation, and radical desulfurization.
