    Flocs prepared by mixing cationic and anionic fine particle size ion exchange resins are useful in filtration and ion exchange processes. Such flocs comprising weakly acidic and weakly basic ion exchange resins may be regenerated thermally. The resins comprise substantially spherical beads of crosslinked copolymer having diameters of 0.01 to 1.5 micrometers and bearing 0.7 to 1.5 ion exchange functional groups per monomer unit.

    Cation exchange processes can be carried out by treating liquids containing ionic impurities with particles, optionally in emulsion in aqueous media, of cation exchange resin which comprise approximately spherical beads of crosslinked copolymer having diameters of 0.01 to 1.5 micrometers and bearing 0.7 to 1.5 cation exchange functional groups per monomer unit (see fig. 1). The particles may be removed from the treated liquid by flocculation. The particles or emulsions thereof may be made by emulsion polymerization followed by functionalization, in some cases after, in some cases at the same time as, and in some cases without, coagulation of the emulsion polymer to form coagulum particles of the copolymer beads which may, if necessary, be subsequently redispersed in liquids. Emulsions of the strong acid resins and particles of the weak acid resins in the free base form. both as such and in emulsions are also claimed.

    lon exchange can be carried out between ion exchange resins having a particle size of 0.01 to 1.5 micrometers and macrobead ion exchange resins having a particle size of at least 40 micrometers in batch and continuous processes. This can be used to place the fine resins in a desired ionic form either during their preparation or to regenerate them after use. Individual or mixed fine resins and individual or mixed macrobead resins can be used in this way.

    Submicroscopic particles of anion exchange resin comprise approximately spherical beads of crosslinked copolymer having diameters of 0.01 to 1.5 micrometers and bear 0.7 to 1.5 anion exchange functional groups per monomer unit (see fig. 1). The particles may be used in the removal of ionic impurities from liquids and may subsequently be separated from the treated liquids by flocculation. The particles may be made by emulsion polymerization followed by coagulation of the emulsion polymer beads, separation of the resulting coagulum particles from the ' emulsion polymerization medium and functionalization of the beads. which in some cases will remain as coagulum particles and in other cases will redisperse during functionalization. Also of interest are chloromethylated intermediates for the functionalized resin.

    Sugar solutions may be treated with fine particles of ion exchange resin for example to decolorise and clarify the solutions in the case of anion exchange resins and to invert the sugar or soften the solutions in the case of cation exchange resins. The resins comprise approximately spherical beads of crosslinked copolymer having diameters of 0.01 to 1.5 micrometers and bearing 0.7 to 1.5 ion exchange functional groups per monomer unit. The solutions may contain ionically charged particulate impurities which will form a floc with the ion exchange resin, particularly anion exchange resin, or a separate flocculating agent may be added and the floc subsequently separated from the sugar solution.
