New symmetrical bisspiropyrans of the indoline series, which have photochromic properties and are characterized by substantially higher absorption capacity of cyclic isomers in comparison to the monospiropyrans, were obtained on the basis of 4,6-dihydroxy-5-methylisophthalaldehyde.

Photochromic spiro[indoline-benzopyrans] containing 4,5-diphenyloxazolyl group at position 8 of the benzopyran fragment have been obtained. New diphenyloxazolyl-substituted spiropyrans manifest considerably higher thermal stability of the merocyanine isomers than their naphthopyran analogs.

Novel photochromic 5′-(1,3-benzothiazol-2-yl)-substituted spiro[indoline-2,3′-naphthopyrans] possessing luminescence properties in both the cyclic and merocyanine forms were synthesized. Unlike the 8′-(1,3-benzothiazol-2-yl)-substituted benzopyran analogs, the synthesized compounds are characterized by the lower relative stability of the merocyanine isomers.
A new class of ultrafast light-driven molecular switch has been designed and synthesized. The reaction of 1-substituted 2-methylidene-3,3-dimethyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-indoles with 2-chloromethyl-4-nitrophenol afforded 1',3,3',4-tetrahydrospiro[chromene-2,2'-indoles], following a basic workup. The spectroscopic properties and nanosecond-resolved photoinduced dynamics of five compounds in the 1',3,3',4-tetrahydrospiro[chromene-2,2'-indole] family were investigated. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd.
