A hydrophilic acrylic copolymer contains as monomer constituents thereof (a) an acrylic monomer having a hydroxyalkylcarbonate group which is an addition reaction product of a hydroxyalkyl (meth)acrylate or its adduct with ε -caprolactone and a cyclic alkylenecarbonate, and (b) an acid group-containing monomer. The copolymer is dispersed in an aqueous medium containing a neutralizing base together with a crosslinker to prepare a thermosetting waterborne coating composition.

Atom transfer radicalpolymerization (ATRP) has been a promising technique to provide polymers with well-defined composition, architecture, and functionality. In most of the ATRP processes, alkyl halides are used as an initiator.
