IDENTIFICATION AND USE: Gossyplure is a colorless or light yellow liquid. It is used as a mating disruptant of pink bollworm in cotton. HUMAN STUDIES: There are no data available. ANIMAL STUDIES: Primary eye irritation - slight iritis and conjunctival irritation. Primary dermal irritation - slight erythema. Dermal Sensitization - not a sensitizer. Not mutagenic in Ames Assay.     Efficient synthetic routes to gossyplure and its components (1a and 1b) were formulated. The three key units viz the alkynol 3, the bromide 5, and the alkanal 13 were derived from easily accessible starting materials. Alkylation of 3 with 5, and subsequent semihydrogenation followed by oxidation, provided the C11-alkenal 8 which was subjected to a stereocontrolled Wittig reaction with a C5-phosphonium

In some aspects, the compositions taught herein comprise a pheromone chemically corresponding to the pheromone naturally produced by a given insect, along with at least one positional isomer of said pheromone. In various aspects, pheromone compositions of the present disclosure are able to modulate the response of the insect based on the ratio of natural pheromone to its positional isomer.

    Pheromones 69.1 Stereoselective Syntheses of Nonconjugated Bisolefinic Lepidoptera Pheromones and Structural Analogs Coupling reactions of lithium compounds, (Z)-carbonyl olefination of phosphonium ylides and "crossed" Wittig olefination of bisylides are the key reaction steps in the synthesis principle for nonconjugated, bisolefinic Lepidoptera pheromones and structural analogs. Double unsaturated (E,Z)- and (E,E)-1-vinyl halides are converted into the corresponding (E,Z)- and (E,E)-1-vinyl lithium compounds and coupled selectively to (E,Z)- and (E,E)-alkadienols, alkadienals and alkadienyl acetates with different carbon chain length, geometry and relative positions of double bonds. "Crossed" Wittig reactions of 1,ω-alkylidene bisylides with two different alkanals gives rise to the formation of corresponding (Z,Z)-dienic sex attractants and derivatives. A monounsaturated (E)-1-vinyl iodide is the synthon for the preparation of an (E)-alkenyl bromide which is converted to an (E)-alkenyl phosphonium salt and (Z)-selectively olefinated to (Z,E)-isomers of moth sex pheromones.
