The first stereoselective totalsynthesis of a beta-d-mannosyl phosphomycoketide is reported. To introduce the stereogenic centers in the chain, three linear chiral building blocks were prepared using two different asymmetric catalytic conjugate addition protocols. Archaebacterial lipid C-20 chirons were synthesized by cross-coupling optically active C-20 ''dimer'' units prepared from hydroxyester 7. Vitamin E (C-15) side chain was similarly constructed. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
