    The reaction of succinamic acid (H(2)sucm) with Ca(NO3)(2)center dot 4H(2)O yielded compounds [Ca(Hsucm)(NO3) (H2O)](n) (1) and [Ca(Hsucm)(2)] (2). The succinamate(-1) ligand presents two new ligation modes and coordinates through the two carboxylato and the amide O-atoms, thus bridging three Ca-II ions which assemble into zig-zag 1D chains in 1 and 2D networks in 2. Intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions in the crystal structures of 1 and 2 result in overall 3D framework structures. Both compounds have been characterized by IR and H-1 NMR spectroscopy, and their thermal decomposition was monitored by TG/DTG and DSC measurements. The structural comparison of 1 and 2 with known lanthanide(III) succinamate(-1) complexes reveals differences in the coordination mode of the ligand and in the coordination number of the metal ions; the biological relevance of these differences is discussed.     Two new 1D lanthanide(III) coordination polymers are reported which feature succinamate(- 1) ligands (LH-) that exhibit three different coordination modes. Compound (1)(infinity)[Er(LH)(3)(HO)] (1), which has been structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, is the first binary metal/LH- complex, the first example of a succinamato(- 1) metal complex in which amide coordination of LH- is realized and the first example of a polymeric LH- complex of any metal. The erbium(III) compound and its holmium(III) analog 2 have been studied by a variety of physical and spectroscopic techniques. (C) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
