A photoredox catalyzed approach enabling use of alkynes as surrogate of 2-oxoaldehydes/1,2-diones is reported. The method overcomes the difficulty associated with application of unsubstituted aliphatic α-oxoaldehydes, which has hitherto limited their general use.
